Kearney Captures 10th World Cup

ARE, Sweden (Mar. 9) – Olympic champion Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT) was back on familiar ground, winning her 10^th FIS Freestyle World Cup of the season in Friday’s individual moguls in Are, Sweden. Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) followed up his win in the last World Cup with another Super Finals appearance, just missing the podium in fourth.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT) won her 10^th World Cup of the season in Are, Sweden.
• Kearney qualified in first for both the Finals and Super Finals.
• Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) followed up his win at the last World Cup stop with a fourth place finish. This was Deneen’s fourth appearance in the Super Finals this season.
• Six women made finals; Kearney took first, Eliza Outtrim (Hamden, CT) was fifth, K.C. Oakley (Piedmont, CA) sixth, Heather McPhie (Bozeman, MT) eighth, with Brittany Loweree (Point Lookout, NY) 15^th, and Mikaela Mathews (Frisco, CO) 16th.
• Four U.S. men competed in Friday’s finals: Deneen was fourth, Jeremy Cota (Carrabassett Valley, ME) fifth, Joe Discoe (Telluride, CO) seventh, and Bradley Wilson (Butte, MT) was 16^th.
• World Cup competition continues Saturday Mar. 10 in Are, Sweden with dual moguls.

My goal was to simply focus on skiing and not proving that I could win or worrying about the results at the end of the season. I was just trying to focus on this competition, something I have said all along, but I think that was the mental lapse that happened in Japan.

When asked about being back on top of the podium after getting 4th in Japan: It feels just as good as it always does, maybe slightly more satisfying when you prove to yourself that a loss isn’t going to shake your confidence. It was great to ski three runs like I know how.

The break was pleasant. I celebrated my 26th birthday with family and I trained at Killington while the NorAm skiers were there. It let me go to Sweden revived.

Talking about Hannah Kearney: Confidence is her middle name it seems. It takes her making a mistake to beat herself right now. The more she can be spurred on by the little challenges in her own skiing and not be worried about what she needs to do to beat somebody else, the better she is.
