Jacobellis Second in Austria

MONTAFON, Austria (Dec. 12, 2015) Snowboardcross athletes kick off their 2015/16 season this week with a FIS World Cup event held deep in the Austrian Alps. Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) started her season strong when she scored her first World Cup podium of the season in a nail-biter, photo finish.

Though Jacobellis didn’t get a great start, she raced hard through the course, catching Nelly Moenne Loccoz of France and passing for the lead. Moenne Loccoz then drafted off Jacobellis to the end, where the two crossed the finish line together. The immediate result posted on the leader board put Jacobellis in first, but after studying the photo the result was flipped and the four-time world champion was placed in second, the win going to Moenne Loccoz. “I established a really good lead,” Jacobellis said, “It was just that last turn—the way the course worked, everyone catches up there. I didn’t do two features really well at the finish and it cost me in the end.”

On the men’s side it was a one-two finish for the Austrians where Alessandro Haemmerle bested his countryman Markus Schairer for his second World Cup win. Nikolay Olyunin of Russia, who led the final until a mistake on the final jump, finished third. Hagen Kearney (Telluride, CO) led the American men with an 11th-place finish and Alex Diebold (Boulder, CO) finished 16th.

The rest of the American finishers: Mick Dierdorff (Steamboat Springs, CO) finished 21st; Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME) finished 38th; Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, MA) finished 45th; Robert Minghini (Snowshoe, WV) finished 52nd; Hunter Wilson (Draper, UT) finished 68th; Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, UT) finished 12th; Meghan Tierney (Edwards, CO) finished 24th; Anna Miller (Park City, UT) finished 34th; Alyssa Dolgin (Johnsbury, VT) finished 35th.

Sunday is a team event for the snowboard cross athletes. Jacobellis will be paired with Gulini, Wescott with Dierdorff and Kearney with Deibold.

QUOTES

Peter Foley, Head SBX Coach
Lindsey killed it. She finished second in a total heartbreaker—it was a photo finish and when they came across the line the leader board posted Lindsey as first but then they took it down and she got second. It’s brutal when they put it on the board as first and then change it to second.

Baumgartner got hurt in training and so he couldn’t race; he thought he could but he just couldn’t. Hagen and Deibold rode really well, there was a lot of progress out there for both of them. They didn’t make it as far as they could have but they rode really well.

Lindsey Jacbellis
It was a hard moment (taking second) because I fought back for it and made passes and it felt like I had it. When I crossed the finish I didn’t think I had it but then saw that I won. Then they took it down and put me up as second and that moment sucked. It would have been nice if I had won second instead of lost first, that’s always hard, but it’s good to start off the season strong.
