Ligety 16th in Kranjska Gora Slalom

KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (March 9) - The Audi FIS Alpine World Cup regular season wrapped up Sunday with Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) leading the U.S. Ski Team with 16th in the Kranjska Gora slalom, one day after taking his career sixth giant slalom win at the venue. German Felix Neureuther took advantage of the spring weather and charged to his fourth World Cup win of the season to overtake Austrian Marcel Hirscher for the slalom points lead going into World Cup Finals. Only the top 25 racers in each discipline qualify for the March 12-16 finale held in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Universal Sports Network will broadcast the race at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Olympic giant slalom gold medalist Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) finished 16th in both runs during the final Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom of the regular season.
• Will Brandenburg (Spokane, WA) finished in the World Cup top 30 for the first time since 2012 with 23rd while Nolan Kasper (Warren, VT) was 26th.
• David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, CO), who is qualified for slalom at the World Cup Finals, hooked a tip near the bottom of the first run and was disqualified. Colby Granstrom (Lake Stevens, WA) went out in the first run.
• German Felix Neureuther took full advantage of the spring weather to capture his fourth win of the season and overtake Austrian Marcel Hirscher for the World Cup slalom lead.
• Hirscher, who finished fifth in the race, will carry a slim four point overall margin over Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway into World Cup Finals. 
• Only the top 25 racers in each discipline along with athletes with over 500 World Cup points and the Junior World Champions qualify to compete at the March 12-16 finale in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
• Ligety and Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) have over 500 points and can start every race at World Cup Finals. Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) will race downhill and super G. Olympic silver medalist Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) will start super G. Tim Jitloff (Reno, NV) has qualified for giant slalom and Chodounsky will race slalom.
• Representing the women's team at Lenzerheide is Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) in giant slalom and slalom. Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) can start downhill and super G. Joining Mancuso and Cook in the super G is Leanne Smith (N. Conway, NH).

It was a great race, there was excellent competition today in absolutely perfect weather. It was warm, so the snow did soften up a bit for the second run, but they did a great job holding it together with salt. 

Ted had two consistent runs without any major mistakes. It was balanced skiing, but nothing blazing. It was also good to see Brandenburg back in the points for the first time in a few years. He had tremendous speed for the top two thirds of the course in both runs, then backed off a bit toward the bottom. Still, this was a good result to move forward on.
