Kroell Claims Downhill Title

SCHLADMING, Austria (Mar. 14) – In tight competition, Klaus Kroell of Austria won the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup downhill title in front of his hometown with a seventh-place finish Wednesday as Norweagian Aksel Lund Svindal won the race. Kroell took the season-long title by just seven points over Switzerland’s Beat Feuz, who was second on the day. With the finish in sunny Schladming, Fuez added to his World Cup overall lead and will carry a 135 point lead over Austria's Marcel Hirscher into the final three races.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Klaus Kroell of Austriafin won the FIS Alpine World Cup downhill title with a seventh place finish in Schladming.
  • Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal won the race for his first downhill victory of the season.
  • Beat Feuz of Switzerland was second to increased his lead in the overall World Cup standings.
  • With just three races remaining, Feuz holds a 135 point lead over Austrian Marcel Hirscher in the overall standings.
  • Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) did not start in favor of saving energy for super G, giant slalom and slalom.
  • Junior World Champion Ryan Cochran-Siegle also did not start in favor of chasing an overall NorAm title.
  • Men's super G is scheduled for Thursday with Ligety and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) starting for the U.S. Ski Team.
