Fog Bumps Women's DH to Sunday

By U.S. Ski & Snowboard
March, 1 2014

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (March 1) - Overnight snow and a particularly stagnant bank of fog forced race organizers to bump Saturday's FIS Alpine World Cup women's downhill to Sunday, effectively canceling the orginally scheduled super combined. The weather pattern also caused havoc Friday, scrapping what would have been a second downhill training run on the brand new World Cup speed track. Sunday's downhill will now be the final World Cup downhill before the March 10-17 World Cup Finals slated for Lezerheide, Switzerland. Only the top 25 athletes in each discipline qualify to start at World Cup Finals.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • It will be the final women's downhill prior to the March 10-17 World Cup Finals, where only the top 25 athletes in each discipline qualify to compete.
  • Athletes with 500 World Cup points can start any race at World Cup Finals and the Junior World Champions can start the discipline they won.

  • Leanne Smith (N. Conway, NH) is 29th, Laurenne Ross (Bend, OR) 35th and Jackie Wiles (Aurora, OR) 38th.
  • Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO), who has won the last six consecutive downhill titles, is 38th courtesy of an 11th place finish in the Dec. 7 downhill in Lake Louise, Alberta.
