Chip White Honored by USOC

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (June 24) – U.S. Ski Team women’s alpine speed Head Coach Chip White was honored Friday by the U.S. Olympic Committee as a finalist for its 2012 National Coach of the Year Award. White, who led all six of his athletes to the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup podium last winter, was the only coach of a winter sport to make the final round. Adam Krikorian was recognized for the award after leading his team to the women’s water polo gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London. The nomination criteria spanned the 2012 season where White’s speed team topped both the nations standings for downhill and super G. In addition, Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) captured the World Cup overall, downhill, super G and super combined titles.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Chip White was a finalist for the U.S. Olympic Committee National Coach of the Year Award – the organizations most prestigious coaching honor.
  • White has also won the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's International Alpine Coach of the Year honor in 2013, 2012 and 2009.
  • White is the Head Coach of the Best in the World women's alpine speed team, who placed all six World Cup athletes on the podium this season to win the nations standings for downhill by 457 points over Switzerland.
  • He has been with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association coaching program for the past 17 years and in the speed Head Coach position for the last three seasons.
  • During the 2013 season Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) recorded a record sixth straight World Cup downhill title, Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) finished second in the super G standings and Alice McKennis (Glenwood Springs, CO) won the St. Anton downhill for the first podium of her career.
  • Stacey Cook (Mammoth, CA) recorded two downhill podiums and finished fourth in the downhill standings.
  • Leanne Smith (N. Conway, NH) landed two downhill podiums and Laurenne Ross (Bend, OR) earned the first downhill podium of her career with a second place in the last staged race of the season.
  • In total, White and his staff helped boost four athletes into the top 10 of the final downhill standings and all six in the top 16.
  • During the 2012 season, of which the award recognizes, White's team scored 2,428 World Cup points and far exceeding second place Austria with 1,807 in the events of downhill and super G in the Nations Cup.
  • The award was won by Adam Krikorian, who led the USA women's waterpolo team to gold at the 2012 London Olympic Summer Games.
