ROSA KHUTOR, Russia (Feb. 17) – Mac Bohonnon (Madison, CT) pulled out an impressive fifth Monday during his first-ever Olympic appearance at the men’s aerials event of the 2014 Sochi Games. The USSA Team Academy student landed a full double full full, but did not advance to the four-man super final, where Anton Kushnir of Belarus earned gold. The men’s event will air on both NBC’s Daytime Olympic coverage at 3:00 p.m. EST and on NBC’s primetime programming at 8:00 p.m. EST. As always, the event can be streamed in its entirety on NBCOlympics.com.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mac Bohonnon (Madison, CT) pulled out an impressive fifth Monday during his first-ever Olympic appearance at the men’s aerials event of the 2014 Sochi Games.
  • The USSA Team Academy student landed a full double full full in front of a packed crowd that included his entire family. The jump placed him in the top three during the second final. He was in fourth when Guangpu Qi of China landed an impressive jump and prevented Bohonnon from advancing to the four-man superfinal.
  • Anton Kushnir of Belarus earned the gold medal, the second aerials gold for his country at the 2014 Sochi Games. Australian David Morris took home the silver with China’s Zongyang Jia bronze.
  • Bohonnon was named the 2014 FIS World Cup Rookie of the Year in January, a week after his career-first World Cup podium in Val St. Come, Quebec that also earned him a spot on the Olympic Team. He was the only man competing in aerials for Team USA.
  • Fog wrapped the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park venue all afternoon but dissipated just before qualifications, making for a great competition under the lights of the stadium.
  • The men’s event will air on both NBC’s Daytime Olympic coverage at 3:00 p.m. EST and on NBC’s primetime programming at 8:00 p.m. EST. As always, the event can be streamed in its entirety on NBCOlympics.com.

QUOTES
Mac Bohonnon
If you had told me in October that I would be at the Olympics I would have had a hard time believing you. And then if you told me I would get fifth I definitely wouldn't have believed you.

I was able to prove to myself that on the Olympic stage, with the most pressure, I can stay in my routine and not get too worked up. I've trained for this for six years and it's an unbelievable feeling to see it pay off. Especially since the field here is insanely competitive.

Training and going to school at the USSA Team Academy has helped me get the extra edge I needed to get me where I am today. To have everything I need to succeed at my fingertips makes all the difference to me as an athlete.
