Austria Closes Championships With Gold

SCHLADMING, Austria (Feb. 17) - On the final run on the final day, Marcel Hirscher brought individual gold to the host Austrian nation at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Schladming. Hirscher won the men's slalom in a close fought battle with Germany's Felix Neureuther and Austria's Mario Matt. No Americans made it to the final run. Over 300,000 spectators attended the World Championships, which now head to the USA and Vail/Beaver Creek in 2013.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Marcel Hirscher of Austria skied to gold on the final day of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
- Triple gold medalist Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, CO) and Will Brandenburg (Spokane, WA) all sent out in the first run.
- The U.S. Ski Team won the final medals count with four gold and one bronze. Austria had eight overall medals including two gold (Hirscher and Team Event).
- The World Championships now head to the USA in Vail/Beaver Creek in 2015.
