Nicola Rountree-Williams had her breakthrough season in 2018 as a second year U16, winning the OPA Cup (Organisation des Pays Alpines) giant slalom race in Malbun, Liechtenstein. In addition, she won the giant slalom, super-G and alpine combined at the 2018 Rocky/Central U16 Championships and took home a first in giant slalom, third in super-G and first in the team duals at the U16 National Championships. In 2017 season, as a first-year U16, Nicola represented the USA at the 2017 Whistler Cup with a 15th in giant slalom and 19th in super-G.
When at home in Colorado, Nicola trains on an independent team with her coach, Shaun Goodwin, at Loveland Ski Area. Nicola credits Shaun with helping her ramp up and meet the demands of racing and training. “He has really worked hard to adapt to my unique learning style over the years, and now both of us are very good at understanding what the other needs. He is a great coach and friend!”
Nicola grew up on a horse farm in North Carolina. Her first competition experiences were equine jumping and cross-country events. But, she still managed to be on skis by 2 1/2 years old and skied during her family’s annual ski vacations. At five-years-old, an Aspen ski instructor put Nicola on a NASTAR ski race course for the first time and she was hooked. For Nicola, the thrill and challenge of trying to shave a few hundredths off her time was addictive. In 2011, she joined the Beech Mountain Ski Team (Banner Elk, N.C.). For the 2012 season, with the goal of getting more snow time, she moved to the Wintergreen Ski Race Team (Wintergreen, Va.), a larger team with a longer season. In 2013, her family moved to the Vail, Colorado area where she skied with Ski and Snowboard Club Vail for two seasons before moving to Switzerland.
In Europe, Nicola trained with the Champions Team at Austria Racing Camps near Innsbruck, Austria and the Horw Ski Team near Luzern, Switzerland. She competed in Austria and Switzerland, taking home several podium finishes and becoming comfortable with international competition. “Living and competing in Europe was a great experience and gave me a new perspective. It helped me understand the wide variety of conditions and slopes that I had to be proficient...and how hard I would have to work to achieve my goals," she said.
OFF THE SNOW
Nicola loves the outdoors and is often hiking or trail running. She enjoys reading (her record is 17 books in one week!) and writing fiction as well as photography and painting. She's currently a junior at Vail Mountain School and is thankful for their unbelievable level of support.
