BIO

In 2008, while competing in a snowcross race, Mike Schultz drifted off course, flying off his snowmobile and landing on his left leg. He sustained a severe compound fracture to his knee and, after multiple surgeries, had his leg amputated above the knee. Schultz has been a lifetime lover of action sports, and his amputation left him looking for a solution to help him to continue performing at a high level. This led him to engineer his own prosthetic knee, which utilizes a patented linkage system and mountain bike shock, which helped him earn a motocross adaptive silver medal at the X Games, and start snowboarding in 2009. This experience made Mike realize the need for advancements in high-impact adaptive sports prosthetics, so he founded BioDapt, Inc. in July 2010. Since then, he has made the Moto Knee available to active amputees across North America, and now more than 100 wounded soldiers, extreme athletes, and amputees are using Mike’s prosthetics. In 2010, Schultz became the first person to win a gold medal at the Summer and Winter X Games. Mike’s love of action sports and enjoyment of new challenges led him to become competitive in snowboarding after already successful careers in snowcross and motocross. He rose through the national ranks, joined the U.S. Para Snowboard Team in 2015, and showed impressive results on the World Cup circuit. In the past nine years. Schultz has become a three-time Paralympic medalist (1 gold, two silver) and three-time medalist at World Champs (2 silver, one bronze).

This past season, the entire U.S. Paralympic snowboard team in the LL-1 and LL-2 classes used Mike’s prosthetic knee and foot.

Mike’s hobbies include motocross, snowmobiling, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing, and working in his shop. In 2010, he was inducted into the Athletes with Disabilities Network Hall of Fame. Schultz is also a published author and public speaker and has even given a Ted Talk on adapting to golden opportunities.
