Alpine Sport Committee

Organization & Purpose

The Alpine Sport Committee pursuant to U.S. Ski & Snowboard Bylaw Article VI (c) will work with the staff of U.S. Ski & Snowboard to develop plans, strategies, and policies for submission to the president and CEO for the development and operations of alpine skiing and to assist U.S. Ski & Snowboard in the operation of the alpine skiing programs consistent with FIS regulations, U.S. Ski & Snowboard bylaws and The Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sport Act.

The authority and responsibility of the ASC are defined as working with the staff of U.S. Ski & Snowboard to develop competition rules, competition calendars, and advancement systems for International and National Level alpine activities. The committee will work to:

  • Contribute sport expertise leading toward the realization of the vision and mission of U.S. Ski & Snowboard in the alpine disciplines.

  • Support the U.S. Ski & Snowboard staff in the identification and training of young athletes with the potential to become elite international competitors, development and coordination of programs for competitor development keeping in mind the participation elements and athletic excellence components of the sport and aspects of a national athlete development plan.

  • Enhance public awareness and favorable perception of U.S. Ski & Snowboard and competitive alpine programs in all forms and at all levels.

  • Nominate representative(s) to the U.S. Ski & Snowboardboard of directors nomination & governance committee.


Governance

The Alpine Sport Committee is comprised of and will strive to represent the interests of the alpine ski community within the United States. Only current U.S. Ski & Snowboard members will be eligible for election or appointment to the Alpine Sport Committee, subcommittees, technical working groups and task forces.

The Alpine Sport Committee will be composed of the following members who will be selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin. The vote for representation to the Alpine Sport Committee will occur at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Congress. Regardless of the number of positions held, each ASC member has one vote. All referenced representatives are subject to election or re-election every two years by members of the various committees or membership groups, except the Alpine Athlete Representative elected to the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Board who serves a four-year term.

  • A chair, elected by the Alpine Sport Committee membership every four years. The chair may serve a maximum of two four-year terms.

  • The immediate past-chair of the Alpine Sport Committee.

  • U.S. Ski & Snowboard board representative is elected by the Alpine Sport Committee every four years. The board representative may serve a maximum of two four-year terms.

  • One FIS representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee.

  • One Alpine Technical representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee.

  • One Education program representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee.

  • One Alpine Development representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee.

  • Six alpine regional representatives, two elected from each of the three regions they serve.

  • Eight athlete representatives, one serving as the athlete representative to the U.S. Ski & Snowboard board.

  • The U.S. Ski & Snowboard President/CEO.

  • The U.S. Ski & Snowboard alpine director, appointed by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard president and CEO.

  • The alpine development director, appointed by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard president and CEO.

  • Up to 2 at-large representatives may be appointed by the ASC (2-year term).

The Alpine Sport Committee will annually confirm at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Congress an executive committee of up to fifteen members, each with vote. The executive committee (ASEC) will consist of the following representation:

  • The Alpine Sport Committee chair

  • The Alpine U.S. Ski & Snowboard board representative

  • The immediate past-chair of the Alpine Sport Committee

  • The FIS subcommittee chair

  • The alpine technical subcommittee chair

  • The education subcommittee chair

  • The development subcommittee chair

  • The regional representative

  • Five athlete representatives

  • The U.S. Ski & Snowboard alpine director

  • The U.S. Ski & Snowboard alpine development director

  • The Committee Secretary (non-voting)
